How To Break Into Fort Knox's Gold Vaults

Fort Knox may be the most famous vault on Earth. Built in 1936 to keep U.S. gold reserves away from coastal cities in case of invasion, it sits beside an army post and inspired the phrase “as secure as Fort Knox.” So how do you break in? You don’t.

The security measures (that we know of)

  • Laser-targeted machine guns
  • A field of mines
  • A 20-ton steel vault door — timed lock, combination no single person knows
  • Predatory drone surveillance
  • Razor wire and electric fences
  • 30,000 soldiers with tanks, armoured carriers, attack helicopters and artillery

What exactly are they guarding?

Over 147 million troy ounces of gold — about US$290.9 billion — more than half of U.S. reserves. Curiously, most of it isn’t modern 99.9% fine metal: U.S. coins minted 1838–1933 were 90% gold, 10% copper, and roughly 64% of the holdings trace back to melted coinage.

Purity lesson from the vault: even Fort Knox’s gold is mostly “only” 90% fine — and it’s still the most protected treasure on Earth. Karat and weight set value; purity below 24k is normal, not a flaw.

No laser grid here — just honest scales. Get your gold’s karat and weight tested in front of you.
